Electrical Services
Electrical power is produced by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and sold at wholesale rates to the Public Utilities Commissions of the Area Municipalities, which then distribute it to urban consumers at retail rates.
COVID-19 update: To support families, small businesses and farms while Ontario plans for the safe and gradual reopening of the province, the Government of Ontario has introduced a new fixed electricity price of 12.8 ¢/kWh for customers that are on time-of-use (TOU) prices. Starting June 1, 2020, that price applies to electricity used at all hours of the day, seven days a week. Having the same price apply at all hours of the day is a more predictable way to pay for power at a time when Ontarians continue to work and learn from home.
For more information, read the Government’s news release, May 30, 2020, and our FAQs
- Special rates are available for large industrial users.
- Weekends and holidays are off-peak and the cheapest price during both the winter and summer periods.
- Two peak seasons: Summer and winter weekdays - In summer, electricity use peaks during the hottest part of the afternoon (noon to 5 p.m.). In winter, less daylight means electricity use peaks twice (7-11 a.m. and 5-7 p.m.)
