Registering a Business

Before registering a business name, please go through the checklist below.


  1. Conduct a name search to ensure it's not already in use.  Check Service Ontario Search, Google, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and ICANN
  2. Domain and Social Media - Ensure availability of the desired domain and social media handles. Secure them simultaneously with business registration.
  3. Decide on Ownership Structure. Learn more about what structure is best for your business here.
  4. Make it relevant to your business. The name should reflect the nature of your business, services, or products. It should give potential customers an idea of what your business is about.

Who Must Register Under the Business Names Act?

The Ontario Business Names Act administered by the Companies and Personal Property Security Branch applies to:

  • Sole proprietorships (one owner) carrying on business under a name other than the individual’s full name;
  • Partnerships carrying on business under a firm name other than the full names of the partners;
  • Corporations carrying on business under a name other than their corporate name;
  • An existing general partnership or limited partnership registering a business name different from the registered firm name;
  • Limited liability partnerships;
  • Extra-provincial limited liability partnerships; and
  • Extra-provincial limited liability companies


Fee for Registration

The fee for registering a business name:

  • Through Ownr, $49 (recommended for sole proprietorships and corporations)
  • Through Service Ontario, $60
