Before you can register, you need to decide on the structure of your business. The most common types are:
- Sole Proprietorship: Owned and operated by one person.
- Partnership: Owned and operated by two or more individuals.
- Corporation: A separate legal entity owned by shareholders.
2. Choose a Business Name
Selecting the right name is crucial. Your business name should be unique and not infringe on any existing trademarks. To avoid potential issues:
Conduct a Name Search: Ensure your chosen name is not already in use. You can use Service Ontario Search, or the NUANS (Newly Upgraded Automated Name Search) system for this purpose.
3. Register Your Business Name
Once you've chosen an available name, you need to register it with the Ontario government. This can be done online one of the following options.
- Through Ownr, $49 (recommended for sole proprietorships and corporations)
- Through Service Ontario, $60
- Through Service Providers. Please contact them directly for information about the fees they charge.
