Centrally located on the St. Lawrence River's north shore, Leeds Grenville is a transportation hub and is home to:

 Air
  • Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport is less than an hour's drive from most Leeds Grenville destinations.
  • Toronto's Pearson International Airport is to the west approximately 3 hours
  • Montreal's Trudeau International Airport is 2.5 hours to the east.
  • Ogdensburg International Airport is located in New York State with access via the Prescott-Ogdensburg International Bridge.
  • Brockville-1000 Islands Regional Tackaberry Airport can accommodate both private and commercial aircraft. It is located just north of Brockville on Airport Road in the Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley. The airport is capable of handling most corporate jet aircraft. It offers two highly accurate Global Navigation Satellite System instrument approach procedures as well as a Non-Directional Beacon approach.
  • By flying the GNSS approach to Runway 04, aircraft may land with cloud bases as low as 338 feet above ground and one mile flight visibility. Additional airport features include new, medium intensity runway edge lighting and a lead-in light system to Runway 22. Airport lighting can be completely pilot activated, permitting arrivals and departures throughout the evening hours. Pilots inbound from the United States may arrange their entry clearance into Canada by telephoning 888-CANPASS (226-7277). Notification must be made at least one hour prior to landing.
 Bridges

The Thousand Islands International Bridge:

  • First international span within the boundaries of Leeds Grenville
  • Connects Ontario with the United States over the St. Lawrence River
  • Spans one of the most scenic areas of the St. Lawrence River and the 1000 Islands region
  • It is a series of bridges linking to Hill Island (Canadian) to Wellesley Island (USA) and finally the United States mainland and Interstate 81
  • On the Canadian side, the bridge links to Highway 137 and Highway 401 as well the Thousand Islands Parkway
  • Constructed in 1937 with additions made in 1959
  • Operated by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority

Prescott-Ogdensburg International Bridge

  • Also called the Seaway Skyway
  • Connects Johnstown, Ontario, to Ogdensburg, New York State.
  • Has a span of 350.75 metres (1,151 feet) across the St. Lawrence River.
  • Completed in 1960.
  • On the Canadian side, the bridge connects with Highway 16, Highway 401 and Highway 416.
  • On the American side the bridge connects to Route 37 and then Interstate 81
  • Operated by the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority

 

If visiting sites in and out of the 1000 Islands on both sides of the border, be aware of requirements for travelling each way.  Canada Border Services Agency, and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol websites and friendly staff will answer all of your questions.

 Highways

Find out the benefits of being centrally located and well connected:

  • This region is where many major Ontario transportation lines converge.
  • Highway 401 - runs west-east across the region and connects Leeds Grenville to all parts of Ontario and Quebec. Enterprise here can transport product to Montreal in the east or to Windsor in the west
  • Highway 416 - connects with Ottawa and Highway 417, provides quick access to Ottawa within an hour's drive or less
  • Quick access to the United States via Leeds Grenville roads to two international bridges.
  • Highway 416 is anchored by the Port of Johnstown, a deep-water port
  • Highway 15 runs along the north end of the Counties providing access to Kingston and Ottawa
  • Thousand Islands Parkway runs just west of Brockville west to Gananoque with views of the St. Lawrence River
  • Access to the 1000 Islands International Bridge at Ivy Lea from the Parkway or via a shirt link from Highway 401
  • Major United Counties roads: 2, 5, 7, 21, 29, 42, 43, and 44
 Rail
  • Freight and passenger options
  • The Canadian National Railway (CNR) mainline runs east-west at the southern end of the counties and parallel to the St. Lawrence River and Highway 401.
  • Spur lines into the John Broome Industrial Park and the Port of Johnstown
  • The City of Brockville is located on VIA Rail Canada's main Windsor-Montreal corridor.
  • Connections to Smiths Falls and Ottawa.
  • There is daily service to all major cities, including Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal as well as smaller stops along the route, from the VIA station at 141 Perth Street in Brockville.

 Water and Port
  • Shipping facilities in Leeds Grenville accessed through the Port of Johnstown on the St. Lawrence River.
  • On the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway system.
  • Provides inland deep-marine dockage for shipping and receiving dry bulk cargo such as grain, aggregates and road salt.
  • Elevator complex comprised of 389 silos ranging in capacity from 85 to 600 tonnes each; annex of 6 5000-ton bins, a hopper on the north side of the elevator for unloading vessels; shipping spouts for vessels
  • Track shed for shipping and receiving grain by rail or truck
  • A grain dryer, cleaner and bagger
  • Owned and operated by the Corporation of the Township of Edwardsburgh-Cardinal.
  • The Port's Marine structures have been divided into four major sections namely the Riverfront Dock, Port Dock, Elevator Dock, and the Harbour Front Dock
  • Canadian National Railway operates freight and passenger rail services along the double-tracked mainline along the Windsor-Quebec City corridor. The Port spur line connects to this mainline. Interchange agreements provides service to Canadian Pacific Rail customers.
  • New wharf, terminal and land expansion for bulk storage added in 2015.
  • Located near the major 401 and 416 Highways.
  • Located near the Prescott-Ogdensburg International Bridge.
  • Licensed by the Canadian Grain Commission.

  • Operated by the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation
